Whether a student has a diagnosis of dyscalculia or just struggles with math concepts, these strategies are helpful for all!
1. Talk It Out
For students with dyscalculia, mathematical concepts often seem abstract,
and numbers can just seem like symbols. Verbalizing a problem out loud,
underlining and saying key words and numbers, and self-talking through
the steps, can help students connect language with numbers.
2. Draw It Out!
Creating visual and concrete representations of mathematical problems
can help learners develop conceptual relationships. Students are
encouraged to show an understanding of problems through images that
demonstrate their comprehension and how to solve problems.
3. Break It Down!
Students may feel overwhelmed by complex or multistep problems,
particularly those dependent on previous knowledge. Dividing tasks into
smaller steps and addressing each sequentially enables greater focus,
fosters connections, and decreases anxiety.
4. Connect It!
Connecting math to real-life situations can engage the learner and make
math real! Tangible objects like counters, beads, or blocks and other
manipulatives can make abstract concepts easier to visualize. Movement
and music and also make math come alive, for memorizing math facts,
walking a number line, or making pizza!
5. Review It!
Students with dyscalculia often also struggle with retention – for math facts,
formulas, and even the language of math. So frequent, short reviews and
practice can make all the difference in making skills more automatic. Use of
flash cards, computer drills, short, timed drills, and math games – for a
short time daily – can make a big difference.
It is also important to realize that there can be co-existing issues, such a
attention, working memory, and processing speed, which can also effect understanding
math. These areas should be addressed. But get started on a positive path
by making math real, and making it fun!
