What is Educational Therapy?

Updated: Apr 10

Confident student

Educational Therapy aims to help individuals, particularly those with learning differences or disabilities, develop the skills and strategies necessary for greater social, emotional and academic success. Educational Therapy at the Learning Lighthouse focuses on the whole child. The educational therapist considers the cognitive and learning profile of each learner to provide lasting, meaningful outcomes.

Beyond Tutoring:

While tutoring focuses on specific subject matter, educational therapy goes further by addressing foundational skills, learning strategies, and executive functioning skills (like organization, time management, and problem-solving). The educational therapist may address the underlying cognitive processes such as memory, processing speed, auditory or visual processing, which affect  and support learning, building skills that develop confidence in academic abilities. Interventions are tailored to the specific needs of each learner

Collaboration:

Educational therapists often work in collaboration with parents, teachers, and other professionals to create a holistic support system for the learner. A team approach is the most effective way to share information across settings, provide consistency in goals and expectations, and support the learner in all areas of life to create new neural pathways and habits.

Areas of Focus:

Educational therapists address a wide range of learning difficulties, including:

  • Literacy-related challenges (e.g., dyslexia, writing difficulties)

  • Math-related difficulties (e.g., dyscalculia)

  • ADHD and/or attentional issues

  • Executive functioning difficulties

  • Language, visual, and auditory processing issues

  • Sensory and regulation issues

Summer At The Learning Lighthouse offers Ed Therapy Academic Camp! This intensive daily intervention makes a significant impact on progress and the process of learning. Great for making gains with reading/dyslexia, math, written language, cognitive training.  Enrollment options for this camp allow you to select the time that works best for your family, depending on student goals.
